Non-Linear Timeline
A non-linear timeline is when events are presented out of order, often jumping between past and present. The narrative may switch back and forth between different time periods, characters, and locations, rather than following a strict progression from beginning to end. In non-linear storytelling, the structure is more fragmented and episodic, and the reader is required to piece together the timeline as they go along. This approach is often used to create suspense, emphasize key themes, or offer multiple perspectives on a single event or character.

Examples of Non-Linear Timeline Techniques:

  • Flashbacks
  • Flash-forwards
  • Interwoven narratives from different time periods or characters

Example in Into the Wild:
Jon Krakauer's book doesn’t follow a straightforward "this happened, then that happened" approach. Instead, he jumps between McCandless’s final journey in Alaska (1992), his earlier life, his travels around the U.S., and reflections from people who encountered him. The story isn’t told strictly in the order that things happened, but rather as a mosaic of experiences.
