  1. Writing Prompt: You will create a scene or moment from McCandless’s journey in a non-linear style, mirroring the fragmented (flash back/flash forward) timeline storytelling of the book. Min length expected > 2-3 paragraphs or 1 page of writing.

Prompt Ideas: Choose ONE of the below (if you'd like) or select your own.

    • Write a flashback from McCandless’s perspective, reflecting on a moment from his childhood or a turning point in his relationship with his family (use the non-linear approach—start with the moment in the wilderness, then jump back in time).
    • Write an interaction between McCandless and one of the people he meets on his travels (e.g., Jim Gallien, Jan Burres, or the hippie couple). Use a non-linear structure to describe this interaction from both McCandless's and the other person’s perspective.
    • Write about McCandless’s internal monologue during his time in the Alaskan wilderness, but start with his death and flashback to his thoughts before he left for Alaska. How does he reflect on his journey and his motivations?
  2. Incorporating Non-Linear Style:

    • Use flashbacksflash-forwards, or internal monologues. Avoid writing in a strictly chronological order. For example, start a scene with McCandless in Alaska and then reflect back on an event from his life that led him to that point.
