Upon the Peel of Oranges
Beneath the battered school steps, side by side,
Two lads, with laughter in their eyes,
Unwrapped the golden fruit the day supplied—
Bright citrines split 'neath overcasted skies.
Their fingers stained with zest, a citrus perfume rare,
They shared sweet pulp in silence, free of guise,
No grandeur sought, no need for courtly flair—
Just joy
The world beyond was loud, and full of academic war,
Yet here, beneath the storm of life and sound,
Their citrus rite became one of quiet lore,
Where their friendship grew, their hearts profound.
The rind curled like a ribbon from the past,
And beauty bloomed where none had thought to look—
A bond unspoken, yet one meant to last.
Beneath the coarse exterior lies a world of brightness. A fine mist of citrus oils sprays into the air, sharp and sweet like sunshine waking up your nose. The peel unzips in curling strips, revealing smooth, glistening segments tucked in like precious gems. With each pull, the orange softens—its hidden warmth and vibrant color blooming through the bitterness of the rind.
It is in this quiet moment—sticky-fingered and smiling—that beauty arrives, not with grandeur, but with the quiet surprise of sweetness hiding in something so ordinary.
